The Message for Sunday, June 5

Today, there were some difficulties in getting the message recorded, so here is the outline, and a short comment about what the message covered.

The Inspiration of Suffering             Hebrews 2:5-18

1.  Jesus’suffering crowned Him with glory and honor.

2.  Jesus’ suffering perfected Him as Savior.

3.  Jesus’ suffering made Him our Brother and this helps us in our
temptation.

The Hebrews who were professing faith in Christ were facing all kinds of persecution and suffering.  They were tempted to go back to the faith system “delivered by angels” and get away from the problems of professing faith in Christ.  They are first instructed that Jesus is superior to angels, and that there is no escape from God’s judgment anywhere other than faith in Christ.  And then in our passage for today, they are shown how Jesus, by His own suffering, is the inspiration for our suffering.  We can continue on, and trust the Lord, who “tasted death for everyone,” and we can suffer because He suffered.

Today people would like to escape the suffering that comes from professing Christ in the same way as the Hebrews.  Jesus is like the captain on the ballfield of life and salvation, who came onto the ballfield with us, the team.  His suffering as a man, like a captain taking injuries with the team, inspires us to endure suffering in the cause of the game.  In order to come onto the ballfield with us, Jesus became fully a man and lived a life of suffering for us, finally suffering in death out of obedience to the plan of the Father, to save us from our sin.  He was carried off the ballfield after suffering to the death, buried, and rose up from the grave, proving He was the prophecied Son of God.  We can look to Him who suffered as a man, suffering even to His death, for us, and we can have the kind of enduring faith that saves, given only by God’s grace.

We have the inspiration of suffering.

Mark Worden has accepted the call to serve with us as Associate Pastor

We have seen God’s hand over the past several months, confirming our desire to call Mark as Associate Pastor.  After involvement and input from the church body, discussions with Mark and Tammie, and much prayer over the past couple of months, we extended a call to Mark yesterday, and he accepted the call today!  We are rejoicing in what God is doing in hearts and lives here, and among us as a body!

On the first Good Friday, Jesus said,

“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Proclaiming and Demonstrating Jesus’ Resurrection

The Gospel is not complete without proclaiming Jesus’ resurrection.

When Paul wrote to the Corinthians, he gave a concise statement of the message which saves.  Some have called it “the Gospel in a nutshell.”

This is found in (1 Corinthians 15:1-4 ESV) “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, [2] and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. [3] For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, [4] that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures…”

Jesus’ resurrection gives us the ability to believe in Him, to trust who He is and what He accomplished for us through His suffering death on the cross.  We must come to know Jesus rose again.  Knowing this, we turn from our sin and from trusting anything else, to trusting in Him alone as the one worthy to lay down His own life for our redemption.  And just as He rose from the grave, we are given new life after having been dead in our sins.  We are now learning to know God and to walk with Him.  Because of our Savior we have now escaped the judgment for our sin which Jesus called being “sentenced to hell” (Mt.23:33 ESV).  We have been given the gift of eternal life with our loving God.

Paul mentions the importance of fully believing the truth of the resurrection when he writes to the Romans: (Romans 10:8-11 ESV) “But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); [9] because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. [11] For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

One could confess with the mouth, not believing, and it would mean nothing at all.  But one who believes also confesses with the mouth.  The phrase used in the first passage above, “if you hold fast,” is important to understand.  Holding fast, and even confessing, does not save us.  God saves us through the truth, and the resurrection is a vital, indispensable part of the truth.  We “hold fast” because we do truly believe and have been brought out of our sins to this new life.

We want to be sure we are proclaiming Jesus’ resurrection and demonstrating its truth with our lives!

What are we about as a church?

You may have noticed the two phrases here on this site and on our church sign that say: Learning to Know God…….Inviting the Community.  We chose these phrases because they sum up what we are about.  We are not talking about learning to know things about God.  There are many things a person can know about God without knowing Him.  We want to know Him and be transformed by that personal relationship.  Jesus said, “If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.” (jn.14.7).  It would not matter what Jesus said if He had not fulfilled all prophecy and risen from the grave on the third day.  His death on the cross reconciles those who place their faith in Him, bringing them back from the broken relationship caused by sin.  He cancels our debt of sin simply because of His grace when we turn from everything else in our life, and from trusting anything else, to trusting Him as Lord and Savior.  This is what Jesus called repentance.  He gets the glory and credit for this.  Even our faith is a gift from Him.  This is the beginning of learning to know Him.  We invite you to come along with us in this.  Learn what it means to trust Him as Savior and join us in learning to know Him!

Respectfully,

Pastor Don Julian
